TEACHING EXPERIENCE

2010-2011                   Women in Business (undergraduate course)

Taught one section of a cross-listed course offered in business and women and gender studies for two semesters (i.e., one full academic year) that covered various legal and feminist topics related to labor markets and workplace environments.

2010                            Planning for Technological Change (doctoral course)

Taught two class periods that covered the topic of electronic games and simulations with respect to the fields of communications and social change.

2009                            eFellows grant proposal (co-authored)

Co-authored grant proposal with faculty sponsor Dr. Pamela Speelman to obtain technological materials funding for the university’s new simulation, animation and gaming undergraduate major program of study.

2009                            Introduction to Games and Simulations (undergraduate course, Dr. Pamela Speelman)

Taught one class period comparing Japanese and East Asian consumer markets and businesses for electronic games and simulations with their counterparts in North America and Europe.

2009                            Global Women (graduate and undergraduate cross-listed course, Dr. Solange Simões)

Taught one class period covering Japanese feminism, comparing and contrasting Japanese and East Asian feminist concerns with the focus of feminism in North America and Europe.

2007                            Technology, Gender, and Popular Culture (graduate course, Dr. Denise Pilato)

Taught one class period covering the contributions of women to the electronic gaming industry and how these contributions do not receive proper recognition, thus perpetuating the mistaken impression that women are not interested in electronic gaming and do not participate in creating or playing these products.

2005 – 2007                Japanese Language and Culture (undergraduate courses for first year students)

Supervised 2 to 4 weekly study sessions as a Supplemental Instruction Leader offering reinforcement of class material and additional instruction for 2 to 6 first year students of the Japanese language and culture curriculum, and completed weekly lessons plan documentation as well as interactive learning activities related to in-class material.

2006                            Himawari Japanese Preschool (summer camp)

Worked as a school bus driver and teaching assistant for a small Japanese preschool during their summer camp.

2004                            Feminist Theory (undergraduate course, Dr. Margaret Crouch)

Taught two class periods covering the topic of multicultural feminism for honors credit in the course.

Organized showing of the first five episodes of Japanese anime series Otogi Zoshi for Women’s History Month including commentary from a professor from University of Tokyo who acted as the historical consultant for the series.

Assisted with management tasks related to operation of a housing complex including office paperwork, computer operations, inventory tracking, revenue collection, inventory and supplies ordering, and legal issues related to landlord-tenant relationships.

2013 – 2014              Doctoral Fellow, Eastern Michigan University – College of Technology

Assisting Dr. Carol Haddad with researching information on feminist issues related to Middle Eastern women’s lives and the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) individuals for a book she is currently completing for publication in the near future, and operating as a teaching assistant (TA) for her graduate courses for Women in Technology and Women, Technology, and the Environment.

2012 – 2014            Doctoral Fellow, Eastern Michigan University – College of Technology

Assisting Dr. Samir Tout with researching information assurance grant funding agencies and institutions, reviewing the best grant opportunities for EMU, and co-authoring grant proposals for various areas of the information assurance field.

2011 – 2012                Doctoral Fellow, Eastern Michigan University – College of Technology

Assisted Dr. Alphonso Bellamy with researching the topics of emotional intelligence and mass customization, including using the Zotero bibliographic open source software toolset in order to collate 200+ sources for a meta-analysis of emotional intelligence research.

2010 – 2011                Graduate Assistant, Eastern Michigan University – College of Technology

Advised approximately 50 College of Technology students who were on academic probation as a member of the Coordinated Student Advising Team by explaining university and federal government policies regarding satisfactory academic progress, financial aid, grade point calculation, grade grievance procedures, and other elements in order to assist them in their efforts to return to good academic standing and increase the university’s retention and graduation rates.

2006 – 2007                Editorial Assistant, Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education

Assisted with editing academic papers in Japanese and English for volumes 8 and 9 of the annual academic journal published by the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE). Chief editor and faculty supervisor: Dr. Hitomi Oketani.

2004 – 2005                Student Office Assistant, Eastern Michigan University – Office of International Students

Assisted a population of approximately 1,000 international students with required paperwork, including federal government and university documents, and helped prepare new international student orientation sessions each semester.

2001 – 2002                Chief Editor / Play Tester, Otakuya Softworks

Assisted with formation of new Japanese startup game company including creation of company brand and mascot character, creating and conducting presentations for company products, and writing extensive cultural liner notes explaining various Japanese cultural elements within company products to English customers.

1996 – 2000                Professional Staff, Compuware Corporation

Supervised 5 team members and coordinated efforts of approximately 20 additional personnel during the year 2000 project renovation of the largest claims system at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Duties included inventorying system elements, establishing and maintaining test environments, creating test scripts, verifying test results, and documenting all steps taken during renovation and testing. Assisted with training other programming professional staff personnel on the usage of a new change control software package called ENDEVOR as well as Compuware software products such as File-Aid and HiperStation.

1990 – 1996                General Manager, Nickels & Dimes, Incorporated

Supervised 3 to 12 employees and maintained all operational aspects of family amusement centers in Michigan, Florida, and Iowa.
